Saint Yared is the one who founded the 3 modes of chanting that are today used in Orthodox Mezmur and are known as “Ararai”(for main feasts), “Ezel” (for fasting days and lent) and “Geez” (for ordinary days).Īs “Degua” is the common name for Orthodox Mezmur Church songs, there are other collections of hymns, such as, Organ of Praises, Organ of the Virgin, Praise of Mary, and Psalter of Christ. The Orthodox Mezmur hymn or “Degua” was created by Saint Yared, an Axumite in the 6th century. The “zema” or the underlying tone of the Orthodox Mezmur contains elements of triumph, joy, sorrow, thanksgiving, adoration and supplication among others. It tends to be joyful for festivals and mournful for seasons in which the Church is in penance or undertaking services for those that have passed away. The Ethiopian Orthodox Church uses Orthodox Mezmur to accompany the spirit of the religious services and adapting it to the specific season and feast.
